Level 3 Exercise Referral

The YMCA Awards Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral qualification is for instructors looking to gain an insight into various diseases and their implications for exercise programme design.

Course Information
This course is a distance learning course, where you will receive a course manual and assessment portfolio. You also have the opportunity to meet with an assessor prior to completing your assessments. You will complete a coursework portfolio, including worksheet questions and a case study* and submit this to us via email/post upon completion. Unit 1 and 4 requires completion of a multiple choice exam, which has to be completed in person and is not currently available online.

Entry Requirements
Student's must hold a minimum of a Level 2 Fitness Instructor a in the context of Gym or Exercise to Music or Aqua.

Course Content
This qualification comprises six mandatory units:
Unit 1 - Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Health**
Unit 2 - Professional Practice in Exercise Referral
Unit 3 - Understanding Medical Conditions for Exercise Referral
Unit 4 - Applying Principles of Nutrition and Physical Activity**
Unit 5 - Planning Exercise Referral Programmes with Patients
Unit 6 - Instructing Exercise with Referred Patients***

*The chosen client for the case study should have a minimum of TWO conditions that have been covered in the qualification;
  • Cardiovascular disease: hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia
  • Metabolic/immunological: obesity, diabetes Type 1 and Type 2
  • Musculoskeletal: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, simple mechanical back pain, osteoporosis and joint replacement
  • Respiratory: asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Psychological/mental health: depression, anxiety and stress

** - these units are assessed via a multiple choice theory exams. You can book your theory exam by selecting a date on our book an assessment form.

*** - this unit requires a practical assessment which is to be submitted to us on DVD or you can attend our centre in Telford. Please read our FAQ page for guidance on how to submit a DVD assessment.
